D-Briefs: Ogoglio Demo, IBM, CBS, Playboy

3pointD briefsThese are busy days in the metaverse! Get your B-Town 3D on tonight with the latest metaverse meetup, which features Ogoglio’s Trevor Smith demo’ing his open-source 3D spaces project. The evening starts at everyone’s favorite Williamsburg retro video game bar, Barcade, before proceeding into the night — or into Jerry’s apartment. Also, check out machinima from IBM and CBS, food from Spain, and (presumably) naked avatars from Playboy.

• Trevor Smith is a one-man band beating the 3D drum — or rather, creating “an online city for work” through his open-source 3D environments tool, Ogoglio. Tonight he brings it to Brooklyn for the latest metaverse meetup, which meets up at Barcade at 7pm to get things loosened up, and then proceeds most likely to Jerry’s house for the demo proper, supposedly at 8:15, heh.

• A slip of the Twit by IBM’s Ian Hughes indicates that Big Blue is preparing some CNBC commercials that are at least in part produced from machinima of the company’s cool Wimbledon build in the virtual world of Second Life.

• The machinima clip that CBS used to open its upfront presentation, produced by the Electric Sheep Company, has finally been posted to YouTube.

• The Second Life Relay For Life is roaring ahead, but did you know that in addition to walking for cancer research you can also fly to fight multiple sclerosis? Check out The MS Fly, which kicks off this Sunday, June 10, in Second Life.

• Barcelona chef Manuel Diez of L’Arrel del Born will reveal the secrets behind the preparation of his Skrei Cod Over Black Cuttlefish Rice. Look for the Spanish chef to appear in SL as Chef Uriza, according to a press release. “The show will consist of the chef’s narrative with a slide show. The step-by-step lesson will be released exclusively in the virtual world.” Cool. Don your virtual oven mitt Monday, June 11 at noon SL Time for the Spanish version, and the same time the following day in English.

• And finally, according to the new Playboy ad that’s now in the Second Life Herald, it looks like the mag’s virtual presence in Second Life will open with a two-day party starting June 12. Enjoy.

I’m less of a one man band than the first guy who sits down at a jazz club pickup session. I was working the snares when the pianist chimed in with a sweet progression, so then the horns became interested and pretty soon there’s a band on stage.
