D-Briefs: Parties, Sweden, Jobs, Charity
Two stories out of Sweden in today’s D-Briefs, plus a charity in Africa, a party for a book of watercolors and one for Second Lifers in Europe, and eight job openings — all happening in or around virtual worlds.
• SL.UK07, Europe’s annual meetup for Second Lifers, now has a date: it’ll take place 23 June, starting midday (that’s noon if you’re American) till “rather late,” at a place called the T-Bar, located in the Tea Building, Shoreditch High Street, London E1. RSVP to Nick [at] riversrunred.com. Machinima or video submissions can be sent to Eddie Escher in SL, music submissions to Neil [at] riversrunred.com, and art gallery submissions / video projections to Rosie [at] riversrunred.com, all of which must be received by 16 June. Places are limited, RSVP early.
• Sweden’s »official embassy« in the virtual world of Second Life opened last night with a party attended by Swedish foreign minister Cark Bildt. The project was shepherded into being by Ogle Earth’s Stefan Geens (who was blogging about it until recently), in concert with 3pointD’s sponsors the Electric Sheep Company. Check it out, and don’t forget to pick up some of the virtual IKEA furniture that’s available »at the embassy«.
• Meanwhile, in the real Sweden, the fourth League of Worlds conference has been set for October 9-13. Never heard of the League? Neither had I. Second Life’s Pathfinder Linden is keynoting, and you can submit papers until June 3. The conference is focused mostly on educational uses for virtual worlds.
• Check out Amy Wilson’s watercolors of Second Life if you haven’t already. Then buy her book and head to the in-world signing on Saturday, June 2, 6pm SL Time (9pm Eastern) »in the Pooley region« of SL. Books will be available for free during a brief window at the start of the signing, and then will go on sale »at Bergman Books« in the Nemesis region.
• Global Kids‘ Online Leadership Program, which has a strong presence on Second Life’s teen grid, has eight job openings to fill. If you think you have what it takes to use virtual worlds to foster leadership skills in young people around the world, get in touch.
• Over at ING’s virtual Holland, community member Naomi Talon is helping out a charitable organization called Let Kids Smile [<-- in Dutch] by raising money for an orphanage in Ghana, with a benefit party »in Our Virtual Holland« on Thursday, May 31. Naomi will hold a lottery, with the winner receiving a month’s stay in a house with a private beach in Second Life. A Web site [<-- in Dutch] has more details.
