Map of RL Brands Operating in Second Life

View the full-size map
Nic Mitham at the K Zero blog (a marketing and branding company) posted a map a few days ago of all the real-world brands he could find operating in the virtual world of Second Life, and now he’s already posted a new version. Nice work, though tough to keep up. (Interested readers could help by contacting Nic with new finds, I suppose.) If done well, this could become a great resource. Never content to leave well enough alone, though, I thought up two feature suggestions:
• leave the map at a static URL which simply directs people to latest version [UPDATE: A link to Nic’s static map is now available.]
• make the company names into clickable secondlife:// links
Just thought I’d blog it in case people were interested, especially since there was so much interest from corporates at Virtual Worlds 2007. [Originally spotted on JJProjects.]
[A note before we leave you: I’m not taking the week off from blogging because of the Kathy Sierra affair, but I am going to try to mark all my posts today with a message like this, despite the fact that some other people have a blogging boycott on today. I’m not sure a boycott is the right thing for me, but I don’t mind interrupting a few posts for a public service announcement about an insult culture that has run right off the rails. See you soon.]

Very interesting. We have been trying to develop something similar for our community. It involves a user editable map whereby our members can post locations, images and discriptions to a live SL map all sorted into catagories such as homes, shops, RL brands, Cool places, etc. These links are slurls aswell.
Anyhow, we haven’t made great progress yet and really need a whiz to help finish the project.
Let’s not forget that there are non-corporate brands too, many large universities have branded sims in secondlife, similarly ngo’s and governmental agencies have brands/identities for promotion.

[…] Great find by Mark Wallace… here is some previous ranting about Second Life that I posted a while ago […]
Hey Mark, here’s a static URL for my brand map.

Thanks for the post. Also, I’m workking on a university version as well.
Nice way to celebrate the stamping out of inworld brands, very telling. Sick, really, as if an entire world was a submerged continent of Atlantis — except that Atlantis is paying the Lindens bottom line in more tier, collectively speaking, than all of the big corporations together. That proportion may change. It didn’t yet.
And…I’m more than annoyed, Walker, that it takes some famous blogger like Kathy Sierra to get the kind of death threats and insults I get ROUTINELY to get you to stand up to “an insult culture that has run right off the rails,”
When I was the one getting the most grotesque and foul and hideous insults in the thread about emerging game culture at Terra Nova when you were guest author, where were you? Where were the other gentlmen? You didn’t speak up. You didn’t post. So, yeah, this is a great heroic action on your part, but closer to home, it looks like the victim deserves it, eh?
You will never get me to believe that you care about “the insult culture that has run off the rails” until you go back in that Terra Nova thread where you were the guest poster and say, “This is an insult culture that has run off the rails.” You don’t even have to defend me. But you have to name the thing for what it is: an insult culture that has run off the rails.
I didn’t read every single one of the comments in that thread, Prok, but none of the ones I read were as egregious as what Kathy Sierra has had directed at her. Though as I say, I could have missed some. And of course I defended at length and vociferously, on SecondCast, your right to be left alone and unharrassed.
Nice to see Nic’s blog appearing in 3pointD. There’s some good stuff in there, if you rummage about.
This wiki is quite comprehensive as well. I updated my post with this link.

Any reason academics were excluded?
Hiro… Nic has now added Universities. I’m sure any help would be appreciated!
The Second Life brand map has been updated (again), this time with pending corporate launches. Here’s the link:
