Get Your 3D Social Media On Monday In Kaneva
Marketing man and podcaster Greg Verdino reports that the virtual world of Kaneva, which 3pointD covered in detail recently, is about to go into open beta on Monday, March 19. Get your media ready, kids. Kaneva gives members an apartment where they can upload photos, videos and other content to share in a 3D social environment — as close to a 3D MySpace as I’ve seen. It’s a potentially powerful idea, the ability to be present in the same space with the people who are viewing your content, but it remains to be seen how it takes hold. Two pre-emptive feature requests: (1) At present, you need to upload your content to the Kaneva site, and then link it in the world. I’d love to see the interactive picture frames and televisions in Kaneva be able to pull content directly from Flickr or YouTube. (2) I’d also love to see that content become clickable, so that you could see a photo on an apartment wall and click through to the Web page where it’s taken from. Neither of those things is possible at the moment, but Kaneva hinted to me that something like this might be coming. We’ll see. It’s a very interesting place nonetheless. Feel free to send word of your impressions once you get in next week.

I hope they will add Flickr, Youtube. etc support as well, but doubt it, with the way they have setup the media things. Seems like they want you to upload everything on their network.
Mashing up Kaneva…
One way and another epredator in Kaneva managed to get on the early beta so I have been wandering around the new virtual environment. Or as has been pointed out myspace with 3d.
I am sure that this will get a lot of press and be very popular, but as 3…
No Mac version?!? No interest! :P
Can you actually _do anything_ in Kaneva apart from upload stuff and chat to people? Is there actually a point to it in itself, an added value? I’ve been trying to work this out but I just can’t see it.
Sharing media is incredibly valuable to a huge number of people, as is socializing around it. You don’t seem to be able to “do” things like you can “do” them in SL, but there is an added value in creating a 3D social space around media. I don’t know if Kaneva is the one true solution where that’s concerned, but it’s interesting.
I think many of the 3-D worlds popping up - and their 2-D counterparts - are resistant to the idea of linking to third party sites because of link rot.
I gotta say, I’ve been playing around with Kaneva for the last two weeks and I’m not enthralled yet. Search is difficult, and I’m getting random people raving me and friending me so they can get a virtual world invite. I’ve got 30 friends, I’ve started two communities (one for Twitter!) and I still don’t have a clue how it’s better/improved/different than the status quo. But I’m not counting it out just yet.
Flickr and YouTube support are on the way… as are hundreds of other external flash widgets… External media is very important and we plan on embracing it extensively on the web site and in the virtual world…
You can also “pimp out” and upgrade your virtual home… with all these external widgets and media…
Seriously, seriously votes for Mac version, too. Mac users are disproportionately powerful, guys. Don’t sleep on them. ;)
Any word on when Mac access may be coming?
Virtual World/Social Network Set To Open On Monday…
On Monday, Kaneva, a melded social networking site and virtual world, will finally launch in open beta, according to Mark over at 3pointD.com. Finally! We’ve had our eye on this little gem for a while and, while the lab staff has all managed to get p…
I went ahead and created an account just to avoid doing work on a Friday afternoon… ;-) I am still at the “rave” stage which, as you’ve likely gathered, is somewhat of a feeding frenzy. My account was not more than 5 minutes old when I was raved three times and had two friends requests. Now I know for certain that they don’t REALLY want to be my friends, they are just using me to fulfill some mysterious quota necessary to get the coveted INVITE. So, I went ahead and used them as well.
I did join two communities. The first was for SL’ers in Kaneva. The second was for live musicians. There were about 40 members of the former and only 1 of the latter. I thought it might be interesting if all of us SL’ers banded together, raved each other and then took over Kaneva. Then, once the SL-to-Web streamer is up and running, those of us in SL can broadcast to the members of Kaneva, who can watch us on their apartment TVs. Maybe that’s the plan for web 4.0?
