LEGO MMO For Kids Coming in 2008 [+]
LEGO.com has a press release flagging a new MMO for kids it has in development with NetDevil (who worked on the mediocre Auto Assault, among other things). Due out in 2008, according to NetDevil, there aren’t any details available about what gameplay will be like, but you can bet it will involve some very cool snapping together of virtual plastic blocks. If this works well, it could be awesome. I’ve blogged before about how much I’d like to see a fully functional virtual LEGOlike in some place like Second Life (especially if it incorporated Mindstorms-like qualities, but I’d be more than happy to see it come to pass in LEGO’s own virtual world. It’s just the kind of thing that could make a world of world-builders out of the next generation, which is quite an amazing prospect, when you consider it. [Thanks, Micah!]
[UPDATE: I just signed up to get updates about the game and received an interesting email from LEGO that reads in part, “Soon we’ll be inviting community members like you to help us make decisions about game development, as well as getting early access to the virtual building tools in order to be the first to populate this new virtual world.” Nice.]

This is great news. It would be a crying shame if the game didn’t let us output schematics / packing lists for LEGO builds so we could create stuff in-world and then build it in real life.
ha! Tony, that’s brilliant. You have to sign up for the email thing and suggest that.
This looks fun, can’t wait to see it.
There was another non-mmo, but multiplayer version of this, but it wasn’t in any way attached to the Lego brand. It was easily one of the most enjoyable online gaming experiences ever, and if the MMO is basically the same thing on a bigger scale, well.. it’ll be awesome and I’ll probably burn many, many hours there.
Never mind the kids, where’s *my* LEGO MMO?!
[…] I don’t guess kids playing MMOs is a new thing, but it struck me yesterday how aggressively companies are trying to woo young players. I have young kids (6 and under), and we watch our fair share of Nickelodeon. Yesterday while watching Sponge Bob, my 6-year-old says “Dad, look! You can build a room, and you don’t have to clean it!” He was talking about the much advertised Nicktropolis. Add to that, 3pointD tells us yesterday that Lego is building an MMO for kids. Looney Tunes had been advertising one for a while, but I couldn’t find it with a Google search. I could have asked my kids, but I didn’t want to remind them that Daddy said “no” to joining the Looney world. […]
