Mixed-Reality Fashion Talk in NYC Tuesday 2/27
If you’re in the New York City area tomorrow, Tuesday, February 27, and want to participate in or just attend a discussion of male fashions in both the real world and the virtual world of Second Life, drop by the A.I.R. Gallery at 511 West 25th Street, Suite 301, in Manhattan, at 5:30pm Eastern time (2:30pm SL Time) for an event being put on by Daria Dorosh, a long-time professor at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology — and also a long-time explorer in virtual worlds. In fact, the organizers could use some help, so if you’re going to be in the area and you have some facility with Second Life, Skype and stuff like that, see below.
The event is a discussions of male fashion both in-world and in the real world. Bruce Damer, who’s organizing the event, is hoping to find SL residents who could show up to the gallery as well as those who could show up in-world. Extra points if you have a male avatar who’s a clothes horse. (Cristiano?)
Also around will be Howard Bloom (I believe that’s this Howard Bloom, though I’m not entirely sure); Carter Emmart, who’s Director of Astrovisualization (cool title) at the Hayden Planetarium in New York; and fashion designer Leonid Gurevich.
Daria herself was one of the original memberes of A.I.R., which was founded in 1972 as “the first artist-run, not-for-profit gallery for women artists in the United States,” according to its site. Since then, she’s been doing a lot of very cool work, including some virtual world stuff in Digital Space. Unfortunately, I’ve no idea who her avatar in Second Life is, so I can’t direct you to her work there, but the evening sounds like it might be interesting.
The organization seems a bit just-in-time, however (or even later). Bruce Damer, who’s helping put it together, is still looking for some technical help in various places. Email him at bdamer [AT] digitalspace.com to help put on what sounds like an interesting evening.

I’m not an SL resident (current computer won’t support it), and not a clotheshorse (current budget won’t support it), and probably won’t be attending this (work schedule won’t allow it). But I’m glad to know it’s happening. As a man, one advantage I can see to being a woman is you can wear some pretty smashing clothes, if you lean that way; there aren’t nearly as many choices for men. Is the situation different in SL? Maybe I’ll get to find out someday.
[…] Walker Spaight posted this story on 3pointD, but I thought some of my readers would be interested in knowing about it too. Hey this sounds quite interesting. I am a menswear designer in Second Life and my shop is called Casa Del Shai. Unfortunately, my geographic location spans the pacific and i wont be able to be there physically. Hoping to check out the virtual side on SL on that day. Could you publish the sim address where this event is to take place? I mustve missed it. :)
[…] Hey, any Men’s Second Style readers in the NYC area? If so, this event may be of interest. I’m a West Coaster, so timing and location don’t work so well for me. Hiya, Im an aspiring designer who has a sprouting Jewelry & Fashion store called EARTHTONES boutique and I AM an RL and SL “clothes horse”, whatever that means. All I know is I do have and enjoy a chunky wardrobe in both worlds. - I’m very interested in both the topic and the meeting and luckily I am a local New Yorker, hope to see you guys there tomorrow! :o)
Hey all, I appreciate your comments and interest in tonight’s event. Yes, it’s time to hear men talk about their clothes and the ‘culture of fashion’. Everyone participates in fashion by default, but I find that serious talk on fashion is missing. The huge gap between women’s and men’s clothing is full of unspoken issues and boundaries. The men talking tonight are amazingly complex individuals, a mix of scientist/artist/designer/digerati. And they want to talk about fashion! That’s what my show ‘The Changing Room’ is about.

Oh it is indeed that Howard Bloom, who wrote one of my favorite books ever, The Lucifer Principle. And Carter’s awesome too. I spent a night with them and Bruce Damer and Galen and Daria a little bit back, getting an after-hours private show of Carter’s latest creations projected on the planetarium dome, informally narrated by Carter and Howard and Bruce. That was awesome. I’m swamped and don’t know if I can make it to the talk today, but I’d like to.
