Cruxy Music Player For Second Life

This is another thing I wasn’t able to get working yesterday due to the various technical problems that were plaguing me, but I know that other people have got it working and it’s a good idea that’s open source, so even if I can’t handle it there’s someone out there who can, and who will find a way to tweak it to make it even cooler than it already is. The gadget in question is an audio player that directs a parcel of land in the virtual world of Second Life to play tunes from Cruxy.com, the cool YouTube-for-indie-bands (although more polished than YouTube, and not just for bands) that lets artists grab the lion’s share of the revenue on tracks they sell through the site. Get the player at Cruxy’s »media island« in the Silver Shores region of Second Life (look in the little modernist shack across the lake from the main build).
Cruxy is a pretty cool site, and not just because it lets you embed players for awesome new bands like the bird and the bee (who I now love, thanks to Cruxy) into blog posts. The blog entry describing the SL player is good evidence that Cruxy’s Nathan Freitas (aka SL’s Nat Mandelbrot) is serious about finding new ways of reaching audiences via the Internet, or at least that he’s more than a casual user of Second Life. (I know he’s been banging around in there for some time, actually.) Cruxy also has an »Echo Park Listening Lounge« in Silver Shores.
A Cruxy player for Second Life could actually be a great boon to SL musicians. Since the player let’s you link to a Cruxy page where listeners can download songs and the artists can get paid. While this isn’t a terribly complicated function to code into SL, it’s nice to have it connected to a revenue-producing Web page in an integrated package like teh Cruzy player provides. Pick one up and let us know where to find your tunes.
