IBM CodeStation Library Resource in SL

The »IBM CODESTATION« island I blogged about just now does indeed include a library of open-source objects and LSL code — though not quite in the way I’d hoped. What IBM has done is create a repository of scripted objects and scripts themselves — things like a clock, a teleporter, a mailbox, an object that rescales on click, a door, radar, poseball, etc. — very much akin to what’s available on the LSL wiki (wherever that resides these days).
There isn’t much here that’s terribly exciting so far, and it’s not organized in any fashion yet, but it’s nicely presented, and it looks like being a good resource for new scripters. (It also looks like the Electric Sheep Company is involved, since the objects that hand out these resources are owned by Sheepster Cory Edo.) One nice thing about the build is that residents are invited to submit open-source objects and scripts. I recall a similar library in SL from around two years ago, though I’m not sure it’s still there. One challenge IBM will face is organizing all the information that comes in. A 3D wiki will need an index of some sort. (A 3D index, even?)
While this could very well become a great resource for scripters, it’s not what I was hoping it was: a set of plug-n-play modules that take almost no effort to combine into cool thingets. I’ll continue to pine for that and in the meantime will watch the development of CodeStation. One of the problems faced by the old LSL library/wiki I refer to above was that it required a lot of management on the part of the owner. IBM should be well placed to handle this task. I’m looking forward to seeing what can be made of it by them (and the Sheep?) and by the coding community in SL.

[…] I think there’s a lot of exciting ways this can grow to become a fabulous resource for the community. We’ve been fairly quiet about it to date, but it looks like a few places have been discovering it. […]
