February 23 Metaverse Meetup With 3pointD
Well, Jerry’s at it again. This time he’s roped me in to give some kind of presentation at this month’s Metaverse Meetup in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. (Brooklyn is, of course, the capital of the metaverse, for those who didn’t already know.) In fact, it’ll be a fun evening. The metaverse meetups regularly draw a great crowd of people doing fascinating things with virtual worlds, geospatial technologies and lifelogging, and there’s ample opportunity to drink in a rich stew of ideas, socialize and just generally goof off from 6:00pm into the wee hours of the morning, if you last that long. [UPDATE: There’s now a location for this event. It’ll start off in the back room at Planet Thailand in Williamsburg, and move on from there.]
Of course, this means I’ll have to think of something to say, but that’s rarely a problem. (Is there anything in particular you guys want to hear about?) Maybe I’ll do a little New New Media rap, or maybe I’ll do something more generational. Who knows, maybe I’ll cook up a game. Much will depend on the tenor of the evening, which hasn’t really been set yet since we’ve yet to decide where the early stages will take place. Do show up, though, since these are only going to grow, and by the time it’s a huge monthly party that roams around Brooklyn you’re going to want to be able to say you were there when it was just a bunch of geeks hanging out at Jerry’s apartment.
The meetup is going to be on my Upcoming.org page in a few minutes.
Even more importantly: 3pointD <3 Uffie. (Which means we need to get a more up-to-date pic going than the one in the collage Jerry made, above.) Go. Listen. Join us this Thursday, February 15, when a bunch of will head off to the Hiro Ballroom to hear Uffie live with DJ Feadz, following a set by V.I.P. As Jerry notes, Uffie is fast becoming 3pointD’s official mascot. Hear the new sound of the metaverse as she pops the Glock.

Oh snap. Again, comb your hair, we’re being documented for a Nerd of the Week video. Best prepare that speech well, Mark.
[…] In preparation for this story, I asked Halberd to comment on awareness of Second Life in the New York City contemporary art community, because Mark Wallace calls Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the ‘center of the Metaverse’. My question led her to contact Metaverse Meetup organizer [and Wallace’s comrade-in-arms] Jerry Paffendorf, and she ended up helping to organize the session that occurred on March 30, 2007. After attending the Meetup she shared these comments about the NYC vibe: “The majority of people I know are still clueless about SL. The ones we have brought into SL are intrigued but reticent as they lack the time to fully explore its benefits and options. I believe that this will change as SL become more user-friendly and smoother-functioning. As I say to my friends, ‘Remember when you didn’t have email and now you can’t live without it? Well, SL is like that.’ They nod and smile but their eyes go blank.” She continues, “NYC has always been a magnet for creativity. Brooklyn is a place where young artists can still live in affordable proximity . Williamsburg is only one stop away [from Manhattan] on the subway so it makes perfect sense why it is evolving into a thriving art community. Silicone Valley may be technically savvy but virtual worlds demand more artistic talent to create the actual aesthetics of the environment. That could be why NYC may be viewed as the center of the Metaverse. That, and the fact that Mark Wallace and Jerry Paffendorf both live here and have jointly deemed it so in a brash act of manifest destiny. Don’t question the scholars of the future for they are our oracles […the New Priests? - FL]. Plus, if you say anything authoritatively enough it makes it seem true.” […]
