Would You Listen to a 3pointD Podcast? Why?
I’ve been thinking for a while now about starting up my own podcast, a short solo show devoted to the metaverse in all its glorious manifestations. I’m slightly skeptical, though, as to whether anyone would actually listen to such a beast. On the other hand, SecondCast (which no, I’m not quitting, sorry Cristiano) has a huge audience, as does this blog. So I thought I’d ask you: Would you listen to a 3pointD podcast? What would make that more likely? How long should it be? Any suggestions for regular features? Anything you don’t want to hear? Should I host it over at PodShow, which is what I’m thinking of doing? Or should I just forget it and keep my mouth shut?
Oh and also, if anyone can link me to some simple guides for recording podcasts (preferably on Mac, but PC could work too), I’d be grateful. I think I have a system going, but alternatives would be nice to know about.
I’ll be talking to you.

Oh, and how often should it come out? Every week? Twice a week? Every day??
Only if it’s interesting.. I listen to anything if it’s interesting ;0
The questions of “What is interesting about 3pointD?” I leave as an exersize to the reader ;0
It would be better if I could spell “exercise” so that mis-clicks don’t post things like the above abomination. Firefox tries to help, but I am not able to help Firefox help me at times.
If you made a weekly, 10 minute long show highlighting 3pointD events I’d listen to it more regularly than I do the rambling (but lovable) secondcast.
I for one would welcome something new in the Podcast realm that covers SL. I do love and listen to Secondcast, but at times it’s just a bit too juvenile for my taste, not to mention long-winded and a bit self-indulgent (just my opinion).
You could try something a little “bleeding edge” and record your Podcast over at TalkShoe (http://www.talkshoe.com). That would allow you to do the show live with an audience, and even take calls (via Skype). I considered doing something like this a while back, but had no desire to move forward with it alone.
I’d be interested in a 3pointD podcast, provided you’re offering more value than the blog currently provides. I’m thinking of podcast-exclusive “articles,” interviews, things you can’t reasonably do in print but work for radio. I think you should have guests. Not regular commentators, but relevant guests with specific thoughts on specific topics. I think the “cast” of SecondCast works well, but I’m not sure that format would work well for 3pointD–I’m hoping for more focus.
Format-wise, I’d say once weekly for 10-30 minutes should do it. Could you really keep up with something more frequent? I’d start small, and if you find it “too easy,” then increase show frequency or duration.
Good luck!
Why? To hear your sexy voice, of course! :-)
But seriously, I think it would be good to have a podcast that covers broader metaverse issues, not just Second Life, and you seem well qualified for that.
As far as format… monologues are monotonous! You have to be really good to keep a podcast audience enthralled all on your own. I’d suggest interviews or guests or a different guest presenter each week. Start with half an hour each week.
And please leave out the Second Life in-crowd politics and bitching. There is plenty of that elsewhere, and certain people (who shall remain nameless) get enough exposure already!
Good luck from me also!
Yeah TalkShoe is great for doing a live show, queue the calls etc.
3pointD has always been about more than SL, so not really comparable to SecondCast– a different machine.
There’s a space between a long podcast and short one– personal opinions aside– longer shows are good for indepth coverage, interviews and so on. Short ones are brief- there’s so many hours in the day– but easy to fall into the trap of skimming over a subject and being so evening-news-ish.
Hailing from that space I’ll be the first to acknowledge, you’ll hear the disses on both styles of content– lots of “I prefer” or “I don’t like” comments. What I’ve found from nearly five years of doing this is that if the content is compelling, people will listen, because they care about the content, not the strawman minutia.
Plus, a longer show means I can bike ride longer. Can’t watch video or read a blog on my bike.
I vote for yay and the format is up to you. The content is a given.
Yes, I’d love another podcast about the metaverse and specifically: Second Life. Any length is good if the content is edited. Once a week would be nice, but twice a month would work too.
Oh and no comment on the podshow thing. cough. my stance has been pretty well documented on that.
only if glitchys links were featured!
signed: not glitch
Oh, I’d love for you to quick the disreputable and juvenile Second Cast. Anything to shake that loose.
I think you have to do interviews, however, not go solo. Just listening to yourself essentially read your blog out loud, or one extra blog not in print, isn’t compelling. But catch up with some of the movers and shakers you’re writing about and get them even for five minutes, and people will tune in. You’re the one to do it Walker, go for it.
I would enjoy listening to a 3 point D podcast because I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard from you on SecondCast.
But please for the love of $GOD do not go with Podshow. You’ve already got your own domain, host the podcast off of it, and then use Libsyn. Libsyn rocks.
You should make it come out “whenever you feel like it.” Only when you have something to say.
Yes, I would. I’ve been looking for a good SL podcast and I’m frankly not all that into the current offerings.. so maybe you could do something different? It seems to me, when it comes to podcasting.. well.. it just takes a little while to get the ball rolling… so whatever ideas you come up with.. just go with them till you get good at it.. I don’t know that the particulars of format really matter all that much..
so I say, yes, you must podcast, the pod-o-cast universe needs you!!!
Digg +1
Weekly. Keep it short (there are not enough 10 minute podcasts out there.. everyone seems to feel compelled to fill an hour).
I think you should totally do a 3pointD version of Paul Harvey News.
How about a 3pointD version of The Onion Radio News?
Ditto on the Podshow thing — not speaking from experience mind you, but from what I’ve heard, go with Libsyn :D
Hey Mark — I would *totally* listen to a 3pointD podcast. Listening to podcasts on my MP3 player is vital to all of my housecleaning activities (dishes, sweeping, folding laundry, etc.) I enjoy the Second Cast episodes quite a bit, but would appreciate a regular podcast that is more analytical and substantive. Ten minutes is a bit short for my tastes. What about 21 minutes — the length of a (commercial-free) episode of THE OFFICE?
