Peace in the Metaverse, Goodwill Toward Avs
My father is in Washington today, where there’s a huge march to promote peace and protest the troop build-up in Iraq. If you want to get involved but you can’t make it to DC, there’s a series of events scheduled in the virtual world of Second Life to accompany the real-world schedule, culminating in a March on SL’s Capitol Hill on Monday. The events are being organized by members of SL NetRoots and will be held at RootsCamp on »Progressive Island«.
At noon SL time today (that’s 3:00pm Eastern), there’s a workshop demonstrating sign- and t-shirt making techniques so you can slap your own protest slogans on your avatar.
On Sunday, there’s a 1:00pm SL time lecture on “Deconstructingh Fascism” at Solid Sugarbeet’s »Conscious Lounge«, followed by a party in the same location at 2:00, featuring DJ Doubledown Tandino.
Monday’s march on SL’s »Capitol Hill« takes place at 2:00pm SL time (5:00pm Eastern), when marchers will gather on Progressive Island. The event will be documented, so wear your best prim tie-dye. For more information, contact Ruby Glitter (aka Ruby Sinreich of Lotus Media) or errcheck Hicks in-world. A Monday afternoon march is kind of highly inconvenient for me, which is too bad, since if nothing else, this should result in some outstanding pics. If you send along some good ones to themetaverse AT gmail DOT com, I’ll publish a gallery here.

Reminder: Virtual peace protest on Monday at SL Capitol Hill!…
Just got back from errcheck Hick’s excellent sign and shirt making workshop, in preparation for Monday’s peace demonstration going on at SL Capitol Hill at 2PM PST. I got my love beads, birkenstocks, peace symbol medallion and protest sign all…
this site seriously need to stay out of politics.
if you are against the war, thats ok as long as you express it in private or on another community site dedicated to the american left and pure politics and even in SL but displaying this as a blog entry exposes who you really are and thats a good way to lose a lot of friends because of different political views.
that type of stuff does not belong here.
same thing not only does with virtial worlds but gaming communitys as well. sites like this one are here to have fun and to stay on topic.. not another place for the liberals or conservatives.
it’s also understandable that you people want to speak freely anywhere you want but from another person’s point of view, they sometimes think this site is just another liberal site and thats not good.
this *is* just another liberal site.
So are your protesting against the war, or only one side of it? I don’t seem to see a lot of protest signs directed against Al Qaeda or the Saudi, Syrian and Iranian governments, the main causes of the war and the ones who are fighting against the allies in Iraq and Afghanistan and pursuing Jihad worldwide to subjugate everyone reading this to form a new caliphate.
Instead, you roll out the ‘usual suspects’ of anti-American rallies, Jane Fonda, Sean Penn, etc.; people who are so confused they think America is the enemy. And these are the kind of pondscum you take as your leaders.
You can’t stop a war in which the other party attacked you and continues to have the resources to fight; you can only win or surrender.
So be honest in your protest. You aren’t protesting against the war, you are protesting against defending the West against the Islamic Jihad.
There is a strong possibility that, seeing the continuing crumbling of western resolve, Islamic forces will succeed in carrying out a major attack on western soil this year. Surrendering and going home will not prevent the attack, it will encourage it even further. Then you will be able to exult in the fact that you helped bring on the destruction. You can celebrate the attack and dance in the streets with the Palestinian Moslems and give candy to your children as they did on September 11th.

oh you people and your war! reality has a well-known liberal bias.
Go Mark’s Dad!
Re: Han Fei
Can my avatar have a virtual hit of whatever it is you’re smoking/shooting up in the real world?

No, you can’t because there is no Han Fei in the real world, he’s an avatar.
As to your ad hominem, standard reply, and put it in the standard orifice.
An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin, literally “argument against the person”) or attacking the messenger, involves replying to an argument or assertion by attacking the person presenting the argument or assertion rather than the argument itself.
Actually, I wasn’t attacking you at all. I’m just saying that your argument is completely divorced form reality and about as logical and valid as any other psychotropic induced hallucination. See the difference?
Civilization is at war with barbarity. This reality has been in place for as long as there has been a civilization. Those who cheer for the barbarians, chipping away at the morale and determination of the civilized powers from within are destroyed in the ensuing firestorm. But that is little consolation.
History will have its way. The Song Dynasty fell to the Mongols, as did the Caliphate. Now the Caliphate is back in business. It’s meme is very strong, but ultimately cannot make the transition to being an empire in today’s world precisely because of its medieval underpinnings.
But to simply put down your arms and stop fighting against the Jihad, that is truly a fatal lack of perception. To not look at the world map and at history, instead chanting the mantra: ‘Give peace a chance’, while engaged in a world war, that is someone who is, as you put it, ’smoking something’.
Civilization is at war with barbarity! It’s good versus evil, us against them! It’s the infidel versus the true believer! And if you’re not with us, then you’re against us!
Define your terms as you see fit, just don’t mess with the conflict.
Thanks for pointing to this event, Mark. I of course completely disagree that this blog should somehow be a politics-free zone. Where politics meets the metaverse is just as valid to discuss as where economics or culture meets the metaverse. In fact, it would be a glaring omission if you didn’t talk about this.
We had a great time and did our little bit for the peace effort, peacenik furry avatars and robots and all. I posted a little video here, if you’d like to see how it went.
Believe it or not, 120 avatars in a couple of sims is a big deal, in Second Life terms.
