I came across a good article on the SL News Network that other day about the increasing number of hooks between the World Wide Web and the virtual world of Second Life and it reminded me of a project I’ve been meaning to start up: a wiki in which to record such things, as well as anything else related to the idea of 3pointD. I poked around a bit expecting to find one already up and running, but nothing appeared, and so I’ve gone ahead and launched 3pedia, which is intended to be “an editable encyclopedia whose articles describe technologies and applications that connect people in space, whether that space be real or virtual, as well as related subjects.” Now all I need to do is get you guys contributing to the thing.

To be sure, my first impulse was to say, “The last thing the world needs is yet another wiki.” But I really couldn’t find one place where all the different technologies I write about here were collected. I’d love to be able to collect them at 3pedia, so please dial on over there as you come across cool stuff and stick it up on the site, even if it’s only a stub.

The wiki was put up under a GNU Free Doc license, meaning anyone’s free to copy, re-use and/or modify the content, though they’re asked to preserve credit for the original versions. There are, of course, very few pages up so far, and still some kinks to work out in the feature set. But if even a couple of people care to add something like a page a day, or even a page a week, the content should grow pretty quickly. I want to be fairly broad with the thing, so I’ll probably do very little rejecting of pages altogether, though I do reserve the right to edit things as severely as I see fit. I’m expecting that probably won’t happen very often, though. If nothing else, I’m looking at 3pedia as, in part, an experiment in what kind of content the community cares to build in this way. So get crackin’, as I think such a site could become a valuable resource as more and more people start investigating the metaverse.
