3pointD Meetup in SL: Sunday, October 22
We’ve been chatting on the blog here about the idea of a 3pointD meetup in the virtual world of Second Life for some time. Now there’s a date: Sunday, October 22, at 5:00pm SL time. (Location TBD.) What will we be meeting up about? Well, that’s a bit of an open question, but the original idea was to discuss virtual world sustainability and related matters. I’m going to put together a format for the meeting over the next week or so (look for updates here on the blog), but if anyone has any ideas for things to discuss or sessions we could hold, please leave them here in the comments thread. One thing I’d like to do is hold a brainstorming session on metaversal technologies we’d like to see come into Second Life. So that’s two tracks/sessions: sustainability, and wish technologies. Got any more?
If you want to attend the meetup, an RSVP is definitely suggested. Log into Second Life and send an IM to Walker Spaight, or leave a comment below with your Second Life name. See you there!

I’ll be there. My avatar’s name is Trevor Steptoe.
It seems like sustainability means different things to people: running a green grid, fostering a healthy community, maintaining the infrastructure over a long period, and recording places and events for posterity.
They’re all interesting topics but they’re too complex to address well in one meeting, especially the first meeting.
Perhaps we need something along the lines of an unconference structure?
“Perhaps we need something along the lines of an unconference structure?”
Agreed. Although because it’s not a day-long event, I think it behooves us to do a good part of the organizing before we get there. What I’m hoping at the moment is that we might be able to collect ideas for presentations or for sessions in this comment thread, and then I can kind of push them into shape to fit the time and space as we go.
I think a session exploring the many facets of metaversal sustainability isn’t a bad idea, to begin with. Perhaps as a first half of the event we can chat about that, and then split off to chat about some of the components you list, Trevor. Second half can look at wish technologies and perhaps some related issues.
I’ll launch some kind of outboard site for this soonishly. Meantime, looking forward to more ideas getting tossed in here.
I’d love to come along, and given the last 24 hours, and the last month in general, perhaps scalebility of SL as a ‘platform’ could be an interesting topic.

What kinds of things do you expect to cover under the sustainability track?
I think a discussion of standards(open) would fit well into that. Also the questions, What vital need do virtual worlds fill? What aspects of the space draw people to them and is it more than just passing fancy? Comparisons to the web, what roles does the web fill? How is our usage of the web different than 10 years ago? 20 years? What can you do better with a shared enviroment like a virtual world? It’s not sure about 3D… Is the web part of the metaverse? What IS the metaverse? Is the metaverse some form of technology?
I’m glad Jerry is doing the Metaverse Roadmap thing at Kuurian Expeditions tomorrow. I’m about to blow up.. Looking forward to the meetup though.
standards = good, but that’s sort of an underlying tech.
For near term applications, rather than listing “technologies we’d like to see” it is much more practical to support a small group of skilled developers and to see what they come up with.
I’d be interested in having a small discussion at the event at the possibility of having a “opensource development sprint” aka “hackathon”.
Frankly, I don’t feel comfortable with doing a hackathon entirely in SL yet. I have office space, and if we can round up a few Talents, I would be happy to sponsor space for such an event for a few real-world developers, with avatars from other cities free to join in. We’ll make a weekend of it!
We have several skilled videobloggers that work out of this space, so there is real potential for ‘publicizable’ corporate sponsorship. We would also encourage the opensource deliverables to be reusable for the community, as well.

I love this idea, Transit, but it’s beyond the scope of this particular meetup. In the distant mists of future times I could foresee a 3pointD research lab set up to support, virtually or otherwise, some of the kind of efforts we might be talking about here. For now, though, part of what I want to do is get a handle on what we as users, as well as developers, would like to have, then inject that into the broader metaversopolitan thought-space and see if there are any devs who want to take it on — or perhaps already have!
hate tp plug them again. but these smaller groups HAVE been doing all this for years at the web3d.org working groups on avatars/and everything metaverse…..
ill try to be there.. unless SL is down again like all yesterday…24 hrs in NO space…lol follow up to the 24rs in cyberspace photojournals of the 90s.
btw, and still buggy due to SL scripts being reset/whatever yesterday after attacks…
Ive set up a web3d “mashup” link from within SL……
at the StarbaseC3 Outpost in Podul.
Click the Signage and itll launch a full screen web browser based immerssive world of the exterior of the Starbase C3 in the Vega Asteroid belt:)
this link works 24/7 lol. Multiuser when i get time this next week:)
direct link is activex install for IE only, firefox requires a previous manula install of the fluxplayer at mediamachines.com
.exe is only 800k– fast.
early players have fun….try it…
lets make real business before the web3DD hype falls apart and the roadmap is another 10 years in waiting..:)lol

“what goes up…dada.. must come down….” spinning wheels….
Great topic and great idea to have such a meeting, Unfortunately 5pm is a rather european unfriendly time :-(. I would have loved to join in the discussions
Apologies, zinng. It’s just impossible to find a time that works everywhere around the world. (Obviously, heh.) Next one will be more Europe-friendly, I promise!
Please send me an invite to the meetup. (I would send this via SL IM, but the grid is down. Again!
You’re in, EvansMom!
