Vivox, the voice-over-IP startup that provides voice services to virtual worlds, is giving away a million minutes of voice time free to residents of the virtual world of Second Life. The giveaway will let SL residents make calls from within Second Life to any phone, including mobiles and landlines, in North America, as well as take advantage of Vivox’s unique proximity services in Second Life, where up to five avatars standing near a Vivox virtual microphone are automatically conferenced together if they’re running the Vivox client. The giveaway [<-- details] starts October 4. Vivox is also the company that's bringing integrated voice services to the EVE Online client. Second Life phone home.

Woot. Saw these guys in their demo booth at GDC last March (and a search of the SL forum archives ought to bring up my raving about it). I was pretty impressed then and i’m glad to see they’ve found an “in” for their services.
I heard about it this and thought what is the big deal? But being a beta dog I tried it and it was very impressive. SL is not know for being kind to hardware I was very surprised with the quality of the sound when I called my wife. I used to use skpye but it turned into a resource hog. I think this will change my second life.
I used it and loved the simplicity and quality. I think you had it right when you said http://www.3pointd.com/20060510/eve-online-gets-voice-from-vivox-sl-lags/
Why is LL taking so long to integrate Vivox Voice?
