New 3D Printing Service For Second Life Objects

The excellently named Fabjectory is the latest service offering to produce a physical model of an object that exists only in the virtual world of Second Life. For $75 and up, you can get a 3D model of your avatar, complete with detailed color textures applied. The project comes from one Michael Buckbee (aka SL’s Hal9k Andalso), who also runs Second411, a third-party search site for Second Life. I’m guessing the Fabjectory will produce better results than the other 3D milling service that was offered to SL residents, only because that one more or less withdrew its offer in the end for artistic reasons. I’m not sure of the exact 3D printing technology being used here (an email is out to Michael), but the site says the models “are built from a plaster material that is built up in layers to form the right shape.” Tao Takashi has a good roundup of the situation on his blog, and Amazon’s Jeff Barr has more. Order today.

Michael posted a link on my blog comments to a Flickr set of his a couple weeks ago which might have some additional images of interest: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69775593@N00/sets/72157594258594275/
I’m pretty sure he’s using a ZCorp machine. Last I heard, it’s the only one that uses a starch/plaster material and prints colors like this (though they’ve licensed their technology to another company which might have a better machine/implementation).
I wasn’t aware the 3D milling service died; though I’m not at all surprised. I like CNC, but it has it’s limits.
That’s cool that it includes painting, too.
Oh, and, this has been available since SLCC:

3D-prints of SecondLife-avatars…
those of you badly missing their second life during work may respire: Fabjectory produces amazing 3D-printings with full textures of SL-avatar models to put on your desk. prints are starting at USD 75$ for a 5inch figurine, support for 3d-models export…
Csven is correct these are done with a Z-Corp machine.
I wasn’t aware of the Xardas folks, that looks pretty cool too (thanks Hiro).
We (Fabjectory) can do other items from SL as well, avatars just seemed like a natural first. My dream is to really move this beyond the “cool toy” stage of creating avatars and to find some niches where we can help SL residents apply the massive creativity expressed in SL to the real world.
Thanks!
My friend Amy thinks that Second Life is basically adults still playing with their barbie dolls in their barbie dream mansions. Now we can make our avatars into real dolls!
I would love to have one of these babies.
I wonder if there are popular enough SL avatars that people would like to have them as real statues. I would get a Tateru and a Pathfinder, personally.

Can you make World of Warcraft models also? Please let me know!!!
