80s Supergroup to Hit Second Life
The virtual world of Second Life has seen a number of promotional initiatives in recent months designed to pump up the profile of various musical acts, films, fashion retailers and other performers and artists. But the performers who’ve visited the virtual world so far don’t hold a candle to an act that 3pointD hears is on its way to SL. There’s apparently a musical supergroup of the highest water [UPDATE: Duran Duran, no less!] that’s been running around the Grid in the guise of otherwise unremarkable avatars lately, and have been impressed enough by their experience that they’ve decided to launch in SL big time. No details of the project have yet emerged, but it sounds like a long-term commitment on the part of the group, who were platinum sellers at the height of their popularity in the 1980s — and who remain fairly popular today. Look for more news shortly.

Dude, you gotta tell me!!
My lips are sealed :-X
3pointTease!
*And* I spelled my name wrong!
OMG! You gotta tell me! You really are a tease, pfft.
U2
Flock Of Seagulls?
Is Pete Townsend trying to pick up a teen boy on the teen grid as “research” for his next album? Did the California Raisins count as a super group? Is Winger going to make Doc’s leather pants all the rage? Will Blue Oyster Cult crash the grid with their in-world cow bells?
Based on the criteria of groups in the 1980s that went platinum it would have to be one of the following groups:
AC/DC, Poison, Bee Gees, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Halen, Isley Brothers, Journey, Lipps, Inc., The Stones, REO Speedwagon, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, The Police, Rush, Kool & The Gang, Styx, Moody Blues, The Who, Air Supply, Earth Wind and Fire, J. Geils Band, Loverboy, Asia, Pretenders, Fleetwood Mac, Stray Cats, Toto, The Clash, Men at Work, ZZ Top, Night Ranger, Styx, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, Chicago, Foghat, Duran Duran, The Time, Midnight Star, Motley Crue, Heart, The Cars, B-52s, Devo, Iron Maiden, Boston, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, The Monkees, Bangles, U2, White Snake, REM, Metallica, INXS, Public Enemy, Warrant, Yes, or Pink Floyd.
My money’s on ZZ Top.
ABBA
mmm..ZZTop would be way cool, but technically they started getting golds and platinum in the 70’s if I recall correctly. Quite a few of these groups are missing key players that made them what they are, otherwise they are just trading on their name….but that seems to be all the rage nowdays as a way to keep selling back catalog.
Still, there are a couple of killer acts still cooking in that batch…
[…] Mark over at 3pointD is reporting that an 1980s supergroup is planning to make a splash in Second Life. I wonder… […]
