SL Business Mag Launches
The new business magazine for the virtual world of Second Life (which I blogged last week) published its first issue yesterday. Though the mag’s Web site is a bit confusing to navigate and the publishers have stayed with their decision to use PDF rather than a more Web-friendly format, the writing in the articles is by and large better than that found in most SL publications. The content, however, leaves something to be desired, as it seems to be aimed mostly at new residents who don’t yet have a business presence on the Grid. That said, it’s interesting to see a wider range of content creators featured in a publication like this. The question is whether the current incarnation — both in terms of content and format — will be sustainable.
I won’t belabor the PDF question except to wonder whether it will put a brake on downloads. It doesn’t seem to stop the Metaverse Messenger, however, if their circulation figures are to be believed, and their PDF is even harder to read than SL Business’s. SL Business, in fact, looks absolutely great. The problem is, its content doesn’t quite live up to its image, and one is left wondering why a disproportionate amount of effort has been spent on the visuals.
The mag, even at 60 pages(!), doesn’t really deliver the kind of news and business information it seems to promise. Almost every article is either a brief tutorial of only the most basic aspects of SL business life — snapshots, music streaming, fashion design — or brief profiles of various content creators. Two articles — one on copyright and IP, and one on investment opportunities — contain so little useful information that they’d have been better off left out, in my opinion. There’s also a real lack of anything resembling economic or business data, data that SL proprietors would find quite useful, I’d imagine.
As noted, it’s great to see a wider range of content creators featured in a publication like this, but the book ends up coming off more as a shopping mag than anything else. Keep in mind that a good shopping mag would be a great boon to SL, and if SL Business were somehow to morph into that kind of animal, I’d imagine it could be great success. Also note that many of those profiled also have an ad in the mag, often opposite their profiles. It would be good to know whether these were comped or paid, and exactly what the relationship between advertising and editorial is. If it’s a pay-to-play arrangement, be open about it; it won’t necessarily drive readers away.
Part of the problem will be to sustain the tone and volume of the content. There are only so many tutorials one can publish. And producing 60 pages a month in an environment like SL will also be a strain, I’d imagine. Even the tutorials themselves could go a bit deeper; most of them hardly give any more information than SL itself provides.
I look forward to seeing what SL Business becomes. If it remains what it is now, I think it will be of limited usefulness — although it would definitely be a good place to discover the odd piece of new content. If it refines its focus somewhat, it could be really good. And if it provides Web content in addition to a PDF, it could catch on in a big way. I do think it’s great to see new media outlets crop up in Second Life, though, and I wish SL Biz the best of luck.

Good points Mark. I wonder if we shouldn’t look at this first issue as an introduction, almost setting the background for the magazine, a stepping-stone to what it might eventually become. I’m sure it will need some time to get fully up to speed and no doubt adapt it’s content to feedback.
I was pleasantly suprised by the layout which looks sharp and professional (yet the website is indeed difficult to navigate, and almost maze-like) as you say in contrast to MM which can be a real strain to read I find, especially printed.
In addition to the PDF version they are also producing an in-world version which I’m yet to try out to see how readable it is.
Magazine for Second Life - SL Business - Debuts…
SL Business’ first issue (direct PDF link) is out and there is a lot to like if you are a new resident. Articles on programming, investing, music and fashion are well done for a tutorial. I agree with Mark Wallace……

Good feedback.
That article on IP and copyright indeed was really horrible and not helpful. To summarize: DONT COPY OTHER PEOPLE. Well, duh.
[…] 3pointD.com reports the launch of SL Business Magazine (pdf). It’s not the first publication I’ve seen of this sort on Second Life, but it’s certainly got to be one of the best ones in terms of layout and reading…a must for Second Life fans. […]
All in all, I think it’s a fanastic step in the right direction. Its obvious that alot of work has gone into bringing this publication to second life residents. I think we should focus on what it is we can do to help them succeed, instead of tearing them down for their efforts. Just by looking at the list of the team in the magazine it is apparent that they have a small staff. Good things take time to grow in most cases. So, the question I pose is, what are you doing to help?
And, I oculdn’t help but notice that your earlier blog entries criticized them for using a PDF format. But, it is in-your-face-obvious that you all downloaded it. You must have seen enough value in it to do that. I guess theere is life outside of blogs.
I think it can’t hurt to have the first issue be a primer for new people, and this is a magazine that is delightfully not based in, playing to, or accepting most of its advertising from the FIC, so I can only WELCOME it. I’m critical of various facets of it, however, as I noted on clickableculture.org
PDF is a fucking chore. They need to lose that. This particular PDF is especially annoying even to FIND and get downloaded — I and others waste way too much time on doing that, it’s not designed right.
The article on photography and the new tools was a total blow job to LL — unnecessary, unsupportable with the facts, and not even celebrated by the professional photographers.
ok..ok..so even if my last statement (that was deleted) was unapropriate it is still my opinion. I figured since everyone else was throwing unproductive opinions around why shouldn’t I be able to. Could someone please tell me , (just so I know, cause I’m not sure) what it is that prokofy neva creates? I mean, I have seen so many blog entries by this person and not one of them is productive or helps anyone. They are just angry comments that closely resemble attacks. I’m new to this whole second life culture and I don’t even know prokofy, but if she/he is anything like the personality that I read in the blogs, then someone please inform me when she/he is close so I can run as fast as I can in the other direction.
Also, the magazine at www.slbusinessmag.com is two clicks away from being downloaded, how hard is that to find? And where does he/she get off saying that the article was a blow job to LL -when he/she may not even know the writer and what there thoughts and agenda were? I totally support these guys at SL Business and will do my best to help their cause. Obviosly their are those that will do their best otherwise.
