SL’s Flickr Adds Live Panels

Second Life resident Cristiano Midnight’s Snapzilla — which has firmly established itself as the Flickr of SL, with 200,000 visitors and half a million snapshots viewed in April — has added a new feature, called the Snapzilla Live Panel, which works more or less like a Flickr badge (which is the thing that displays the 3pointD images in the middle column here). The Live Panel seems to be iframe only and not java, but I imagine this will catch on quick. Though the slightly clunky site only has 1,600 users and under 73,000 screenshots in its archives, it has become a great place to get a quick read on some of the things going on in Second Life, and is also a rich resource of the Grid’s visual history. (Interestingly, the site didn’t have a way to delete screenshots until recently.) It’s well worth checking out for a good visual take on SL, and if you’re already a user, go get a Live Panel and slap it up on your site. As I’m going to do now.

Imagine my surprise when I came here today and found myself sleeping on 3pointD! LOLEX.
Seriously: thank you Mark, and nice to see you’ve already got your Live Panel up!
Walker,
Thank you for the mention - just wanted to clarify a couple of things. The Flickr badge that you have on your site right now is not Java, it is Javascript. I went with an iframe version first because a lot of sites restrict the use of script tags, which the Flickr badge uses. I am going to add a javascript version as well in the future. I already have a version that is a single solid image for use in signatures and on sites that do not allow anything but external image links - it is in testing by a few users right now in the SL forums and will be live soon.
Thanks again - any suggestions you have are always greatly appreciated. The site is currently going through a complete rearchitecture, with the main focus on making it easier to use. It will be updated in stages but should be completely revamped early this summer.
Snapzilla’s already an awesome site, Cris. The one thing I’d change about it is to have the news moved out of the way when you navigate to a page of search results, or just in general, actually. I always think it hasn’t worked because it’s still showing the Snapzilla news and I have to scroll down to view the pictures I was looking for. I’d slap the news into a sidebar and get the pics up top so that they’re the first thing you see when you get there, since the snaps people take in SL speak louder and more eloquent volumes than any news ever could.
