John Swords is a fool for podcasting. Not only does he host SecondCast, the always entertaining talk show on all things Second Life, now he and I have started a new show, The Metaverse Sessions, which aims to be a weekly podcast conversation on the emerging metaverse and 3D Web, in all its forms. Our first show has just gone up on the site, featuring a rambling chat with futurist Jerry Paffendorf, who works for the Electric Sheep Company (who sponsor this blog).

We recorded this session at the end of the Metaverse Roadmap, and you can hear in our voices how tired we are. Nevertheless, we manage to cover some pretty interesting ground, I think, touching on everything from massively multiplayer online games to applications like Google Earth to places like Second Life, etc., and hearing most of Jerry’s metaversal life story. Along the way, as I recall, we take a half-hearted stab at defining just what the metaverse is, and grapple with how it may become more and more important as the 3pointD generation comes of age.

I’m just sitting down to listen to the show, but I remember it as an amusing conversation on a number of fascinating topics. John and I are hoping to keep the Sessions informal, with a lot of back and forth and new ideas banging around. Send us some feedback if you think our format needs tuning.

The nice thing about being at the roadmap summit is that we were able to bag a number of metaversal voices all in one weekend, which we’ll be releasing on an accelerated schedule over the next couple of weeks. These included the likes of Reuben Steiger, Sibley Verbeck, Microsoft’s Robert Scoble, and Doug Englebart, who built the first mouse (that’s right), and who’s been thinking about how computers can enhance human cabilities for probably more years than anyone else.

If you know anyone we should be talking to for the show (or if you are someone we should be talking to), please let us know. We’re also rounding up sponsors for future episodes, so keep that in mind as well. In the meantime, take a listen to the metaverse and let us know what you think. Should be fun.
