Exploring Intel’s 3D Workspace

Intel’s Miramar 3D Workspace
Eleanor Wynn, a Social Technology Architect at Intel (and a co-editor of the journal Information Technology & People) sends along the screenshot above to illustrate Intel’s Miramar project, which we blogged a couple of days back. While things are still at an early stage, Wynn mentions that the 3D collaborative workspace system is currently being prototyped “for exploration for distributed engineering work.” The image appears to have been created within a Croquet environment, although my first impression appears not to have been correct. The image above is actually the Miramar environment itself, which doesn’t yet support multiple users, though that’s the goal. Wynn says Intel at this point is “only thinking” about whether Croquet is the right place for it. “A Second Life underlayer is not out of the question.”

Oh, I suddenly see how they’re going to do it now, and what the competition will be to SL. Heck, Walker, you want to drag a document “out of Miramar” into Second Life; I’d be happy just to have plain old MS Word work in Second Life. The single biggest obstacle to having SL serve as any kind of RL workspace for me is this lack of text capacity — you can’t group-edit a document. There’s no whiteboarding. No blackboard. The xywriter stuff only takes you far. The “book technology” I’ve blogged about only takes you through an arduous process that Gutenberg’s printers would have winced at, typing a document, pasting it into a 512m2 PSP or Paint texture, uploading each texture/page for $10 a pop. If I could even just keep a tiny window open inside of SL with my desktop word or email or yahoo working without making a shambles of the SL window I’d be happy. I often do this anyway even tho it doesn’t work so hot. With something like Intel trying to make 3-D workspace, skipping the phase SL used which was “let’s harness all this geeky free content-creating and scripting labour and harness entertainment-seeking masses to do the server load tests”, they might just do it. At least when you use this Miramar thing, you won’t be distracted by a grief ball replicating or a naked avatar on a sex ball.
