When Virtual Worlds Collide

Mashing up World of Warcraft into Second Life
The latest news from the Electric Sheep Company (who sponsor this blog) is of a fascinating event planned for the end of this month that will bring two virtual worlds together. The Sheep have previously held “mixed reality” events in which a real-life location was recreated in Second Life and interaction between the two made possible. But this will be the first “mixed virtual reality” event for the Sheep, and involves creating video, audio and chat links between the worlds of Second Life and World of Warcraft.
The details are still coming together, but it sounds like a World of Warcraft dungeon raid of some sort will be streamed into Second Life, letting SL residents watch and listen to what’s involved in an outing like that. In addition, a chat and/or audio bridge will let the two worlds communicate in real time. A Warcraft-like battlegrounds arena pitting teams against each other in games of Capture the Flag may also be set up in Second Life, and there may be a class taught from WoW, but attended by SL residents. The possibilities aren’t quite endless, but they’re really interesting. And they give an early look at what it will be like once disparate virtual worlds begin to link themselves together. Would love to hear from readers as to other things you’d like to see happen at such an event.

There was this one time? On my old club lot in Refugio? And I like put in the URL stream? And it was like this little radio station that this friend of mine made in TSO? And I got online in TSO, and asked him to play a song for me, one of my favourite songs. And so he got online on his little radio station for TSO? And he played the song. And I could here him say *right there on my little lot in SL in my little club, “This goes out to Dyerbrook” even though I was in Second Life, another world, and not in TSO! I mean, was that TOO cool or what? My friend is now in SL and I’m not sure he still does his radio show but BOY was that cool and it was the FIRST TIME that the two worlds TALKED and like…wow!
Oh, did you want to know the name of the song I asked for?
It’s Robert Palmer’s “Which of Us is the Fool”?
